Many workers encounter situations where dust, chips, or other flying objects are present in their daily tasks resulting in the need for eye protection. Since safety glasses are relatively inexpensive and meet the safety requirements for many of these tasks, they have become one of the most popular forms of eye protection at the workplace. Despite their frequent use in many settings, there is not a “one size fits all” solution for safety glasses in the workplace and several factors should be considered before using this type of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Many people spend long periods of time exposed to the elements, especially the sun and wind. In addition to the skin becoming painfully dry, chapped, and itchy, skin cancer can also occur as a result of too much exposure to the sun without protection.
Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) can be an employee’s most important means of protecting themselves on the job. Employers and employees must work together to ensure the greatest possible protection from hazards in the workplace and maintain a safe and healthy work environment
Equipment used in many work settings can produce high levels of noise. Over time, exposure to sound levels greater than 85 decibels (dBA) can cause hearing loss. If you have to raise your voice to be heard by someone less than three feet away there may be a need for hearing protection.
Eye injuries typically result from small particles or objects striking or abrading the eye. Examples include metal slivers, wood chips, dust, and cement chips that may be blown by the wind, fall from above, or are ejected by tools. It is vital that workers choose the proper PPE to avoid injury.
