OSHA 10-Hour Construction Training

The OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety Training Class covers material set forth by the OSHA Outreach Training Program for the Construction Industry. Courses are provided through formal instruction accompanied with handouts, case studies, and student interaction. The OSHA Outreach Training Program for the Construction Industry provides training for workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and prevention of safety and health hazards in workplaces in the construction industry. Upon successful completion of the class, participants will receive a 10-Hour course completion card from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in Construction Safety and Health. Participants will gain basic knowledge on the following topics:
- Introduction to OSHA
- Fall Protection
- Electrical Safety
- PPE & Lifesaving Equipment
- Tools: Hand & Power
- Health Hazards in Construction & Silica
- Excavations & Caught-In Struck By
- Stairways & Ladders
- Materials Handling & Storage
Plan to allow an adequate amount of time for your class. OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety Class Training must be conducted over two days per OSHA Outreach Training Program guidelines. Frequent breaks will be taken to allow participants to remain fresh and alert. A 30 minute lunch break will be taken on the first day of training.
KEMI Loss Education and Safety will provide all training materials needed for the class. This class can be taught at the policyholder’s facilities provided there is a meeting room with tables and chairs.
Cost and Course Completion Card
All training courses offered by KEMI Loss Education and Safety are provided at no cost to KEMI policyholders. There is, however, a $8 per individual administrative fee that covers the cost of the course completion cards which are issued to each participant.
Payment for Cards
KEMI will send an invoice to the policyholder contact after the training has been conducted.

*Introduction to OSHA: The purpose is to provide workers with introductory information about OSHA. Topics discussed include: why is OSHA important to you, what rights do you have under OSHA, what responsibilities does your employer have under OSHA, what do the OSHA standards say, how are OSHA inspections conducted, and where can you go for additional help. Duration 2 Hours.
*Fall Protection: This section discusses the working conditions that prompt the use of fall protection and options that are available to protect workers from falls. Duration 90 Minutes.
*Electrical Safety: The electrical presentation covers the dangers of electricity, common injuries associated with coming into contact with electricity, safety measures to take, site conditions that produce exposure to electricity and proper controls, Personal Protective Equipment use required for protection from electricity, requirements for working in close proximity to overhead power lines. Duration 90 Minutes.
*PPE & Lifesaving Equipment: This presentation covers the use of engineering controls, work practice control, and the use of Personal Protective Equipment for safety and health concerns. Included in the presentation is the type of PPE required to protect various parts of the body, and the pros and cons to each. The use of fire extinguishers is also covered and well as fire safety information. Duration 1 Hour.
* Health Hazards in Construction & Silica: The Hazard Communication standard 1926.1200 is discussed in this presentation in terms of what the Standard requires, what is needed in a written program, chemical labeling requirements, reading a Material Safety Data Sheet, and the training requirements. In addition, Silica exposure is discussed in terms of common ways employees can be exposed to Silica dust, personal protective equipment use, tools and other methods of controlling silica exposure. Duration 1 Hour.
*Caught-In & Struck-By: This portion of the class discusses a wide variety of workplace hazards which can cause serious or fatal injuries to employees. Hazards discussed include: falling objects, equipment tip overs, unguarded machinery, vehicle and equipment strikes, trenching cave-ins, working near rotating equipment such as cranes and excavators and flying objects. Attendees will gain knowledge on how to recognize and control such hazards. Handouts on accident investigations relating to the topic, Fatal Grams, and other materials
Tools: Hand & Power: The Tools presentation covers the hazards of using hand and power tools, personal protective equipment that should be used in conjunction with the tools, machine or tool guarding, proper storage of tools, and safe handling techniques. Duration 30 Minutes.
Scaffolding: This presentation covers the different types of scaffolding used, the hazards associated with working on scaffolds, and the control measures required by OSHA to safeguard employees against those hazards. Other topics discussed include the construction of scaffolds, scaffold component requirements, and the role of the competent person in scaffold safety and use. Duration 1 Hour.
Excavations: The excavation presentation covers the hazards associated with working in excavated soil, safety precautions to control those hazards, working in Type A, B, & C soil, and the roles the competent person plays on the jobsite. Additional information covered includes safety measure for caught-in and struck by exposures. Duration 1 Hour.
Stairways and Ladders: This presentation covers the safety guidelines and requirements for stairways and the safe practices and requirements for ladders. Duration 30 Minutes.
Materials Handling & Storage: This presentation covers the lifting of materials both manually and with the use of equipment. The hazards of each are discussed along with the use of chains, wire rope, and nylon slings. Control measures and training requirements for work with these components as well as with manual lifting are discussed at length. Duration 1 Hour.
